Singer/songwriter Jack Johnson scores his best sales week ever and his second No. 1 album as "Sleep Through the Static" debuts atop the Billboard 200 . . . Sheryl Crow finds herself in a familiar place on the chart -- the runner-up slot -- as her sixth studio album, "Detours," bows . . . Lenny Kravitz notches his highest-charting studio set as "It Is Time for a Love Revolution" lands at No. 4 . . . k.d. lang also has a banner week as the singer claims a record high on the Billboard 200, bowing at No. 8 with "Watershed" . . . FLASH POINTS
• Jack Johnson celebrates not only his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, but his biggest Nielsen SoundScan week, as "Sleep Through the Static" debuts atop the list with 375,000. His last release, the soundtrack to "Curious George," was the singer/songwriter's first No. 1. It started with 163,000 . . . Of the 375,000 bow for Johnson, a whopping 139,000 (37%) of that figure were digital downloads. That's the biggest sales week for a digital set since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking download sales. The previous high came when Kanye West's "Graduation" moved 133,000 digital albums its first week. Of course, it also started with a much larger overall number -- 957,000, making Johnson's digital share all the more impressive.
• At No. 2 on the Billboard 200, Sheryl Crow debuts with her sixth studio album, "Detours" (92,000). Her last release, 2005's "Wildflower," bowed at No. 2 as well, but with 140,000. In fact, the 92,000 start of "Detours" is the lowest sales debut for a Crow studio release since her 1996 self-titled sophomore album bowed with 80,000 at No. 6 . . . "Detours" is Crow's seventh top 10 album overall and fourth consecutive No. 2 set. She has yet to earn a No. 1 . . . Don't feel too bad for Crow though -- her overall U.S. album sales stand at 16.1 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's more than the respective cumulative album tallies of such chart-topping acts as Avril Lavigne, Coldplay and Jennifer Lopez.
• Lenny Kravitz returns to the Billboard 200 at No. 4 with "It Is Time for a Love Revolution," entering with 73,000. That's a much better start for Kravitz compared with his last release, 2004's "Baptism," which bowed at No. 14 with 52,000. The No. 4 placing of "Love Revolution" is the highest rank for a Kravitz studio set as well. Only his 2000 album "Greatest Hits" went higher -- it debuted and peaked at No. 2 . . . k.d. lang notches her highest-charting album, as "Watershed" debuts at No. 8 with 41,000. That's her third-best sales week -- and best sales debut. Her two bigger weeks came in 1993, when "Ingenue" did 46,000 and 42,000 in successive frames following her performance on that year's Grammy Awards. The big week for "Watershed" was no doubt partially fueled by sales from Starbucks and Hear Music retailers. The coffee giant also aids Kenny G's bow at No. 14 with "Rhythm and Romance" (31,000). It's the highest-charting set for Kenny since "Paradise" bowed at No. 9 in 2002. "Romance" is his first effort for Hear Music after having spent his entire career with Arista.
• The soundtrack to "Step Up 2: The Streets" bows one slot higher than Kenny G at No. 13, dancing onto the tally with 31,000. The album features guest turns from Missy Elliott and Flo Rida . . . Other debuts on the big chart this week include Nada Surf's "Lucky" (No. 82 with 9,000), Conjunto Primavera's "Que Ganas De Volver" (No. 87 with 9,000), Los Creadorez Del Pasito Duranguense's "Listos, Montados Y Armados" (No. 88 with 9,000) and Hot Chip's "Made in the Dark" (No. 109 with 7,000).

MARKET WATCH
• Album units, current chart week: 8.43 million units
• UP 11% from last issue's charts: 7.59 million units
• DOWN 14% from same week, 2007: 9.82 million units
• This week: Only the No. 1 album sells more than 100,000 copies.
• This week last year on the Billboard 200: Fall Out Boy's "Infinity on High" bowed at No. 1 with 260,000. Norah Jones' "It's Too Late" shifted down one spot to No. 2 with 236,000. Ashley Tisdale's "Headstrong" began at No. 5 with 64,000 while Jason Michael Carroll's "Waiting in the Country" landed at No. 8 with 58,000. The top two albums sold more than 100,000.
BORDERLINES
• The No. 100 album this week, Celine Dion's "Taking Chances" (Columbia/SonyBMG), sold 8,000.
• The No. 100 album for the same week of 2007, Trace Adkins' "Dangerous Man" (Capitol Nashville), sold 10,000.
• Average total of the No. 100 album for the same week of the year during the past 10 years (1999-2008): 13,181.
PROGRESS REPORTS
• Since this year's Grammy Awards broadcast aired this past Sunday -- the final day of Nielsen SoundScan's tracking week -- the charts capture some of the show's initial sales impact, along with the general buzz generated from the build-up to the festivities. "Back to Black" by five-time winner Amy Winehouse jumps from No. 54 to No. 24 on the Billboard 200 with an 84% increase. It is up 191% in digital download sales. Foo Fighters' "Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace," winner of best rock album, zooms from No. 75 to No. 65 on the big chart with a 35% increase (up 37% digitally). Best new artist nominee and show performer Feist climbs from No. 103 to No. 89 on the Billboard 200 with a 22% gain (up 33% digitally). Herbie Hancock's album of the year-winning "River: The Joni Letters" re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 159 with a 143% charge (up 647% digitally).
• The impact of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Super Bowl halftime performance Feb. 3 is felt on Top Pop Catalog this week, where the act holds court at Nos. 1 and 6. Atop the chart is "Greatest Hits," shifting 33,000 (up 196%). Outside of the busy Christmas shopping season, the No. 1 title on Top Pop Catalog hasn't sold that many since the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Ready to Die" in the summer of 2004. That's when a reissue of the set helped it move in excess of 37,000 in two consecutive weeks . . . Back to the present day, Petty's "Anthology: Through the Years" bows at No. 6 on Top Pop Catalog with 7,000 (240%). That's the best sales week for the double-album since December 2000 . . . Percolating below the threshold of the Pop Catalog tally this week is Petty's 1989 release "Full Moon Fever," which sold 2,000 (up 194%).

A LOOK AHEAD
• Among the titles released this week, due on next week's charts: the deluxe reissue of Michael Jackson's "Thriller," Widespread Panic's "Free Somehow," Simple Plan's "Simple Plan" and Natalie Grant's "Relentless."
• Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2007 when: Norah Jones' "Not Too Late" returned to No. 1 with 211,000. Gerald Levert's "In My Songs" bowed in the runner-up slot with 165,000. The next-highest debut came at No. 14 with Lucinda Williams' "West" (57,000). The top nine albums sold more than 100,000.
