NAACP Salutes Clarence Avant
February 18, 2010

By Gail Mitchell, L.A.

Music industry pioneer Clarence Avant will be inducted into the NAACP Hall of Fame at the organization's 41st annual Image Awards. The ceremony will be broadcast live from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium on Feb. 26 on Fox.

"Mr. Avant has been an inspiration for generations in the music business," Image Awards chairperson Clayola Brown said in a press release. "His business ingenuity, work ethic and commitment to community are what set him apart and are the reasons why he is deserving of this honor."

Avant's multi-faceted career dates back to the early 1960s when he managed such acts as blues artist Little Willie John, jazz organist Jimmy Smith and composer Lalo Schifrin. He later founded two record labels, Sussex (Bill Withers, Dennis Coffey) and Tabu (Alexander O'Neal, S.O.S. Band).

A mentor to Grammy Award-winning songwriter/producers Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Antonio "L.A." Reid and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Avant was named chairman of Motown Records in 1993. He is currently president of his own publishing companies, Interior Music and Avant Garde.
